Glucose Monitoring Smart Glasses

AR Design | Healthcare Design (2023)

Project Duration

2 Months

Background

The Glucose Monitoring Smart Glasses project involves the development of smart augmented reality glasses designed to sync with a diabetic patient's Bluetooth-enabled glucose monitor. The glasses also cater to anyone interested in tracking their blood sugar levels. The integrated features assist users in managing their food intake and provide quick visualisations of their glucose levels, making diabetes management more convenient and efficient.

Business Insights

The project was initiated to address the growing need for innovative and user-friendly diabetes management solutions. Traditional glucose monitoring methods are often cumbersome and lack real-time data integration. By leveraging augmented reality and Bluetooth technology, the Glucose Monitoring Smart Glasses offer a cutting-edge solution that enhances the user experience and improves health outcomes for diabetic patients. The potential market includes millions of diabetics worldwide, as well as health-conscious individuals looking to monitor their blood sugar levels.

Challenges and Proposed Solutions

  1. Data Integration and Accuracy: Ensuring accurate and real-time data synchronisation with various glucose monitors was anticipated to be a challenge from the beginning.

  2. Food Analysis: Developing the "Food Lens" feature to accurately identify and analyse food items would be complex. Machine learning algorithms and a comprehensive food database would need to be proposed to ensure accurate identification and nutrient breakdowns.

  3. User-Friendly Interface: Designing an AR interface that is easy to use while providing comprehensive health data required careful planning. Extensive user testing would have been conducted to optimise the interface, ensuring it was both informative and intuitive.

Development and Design Collaboration

While the concept was not developed, the envisioned process would have involved collaboration between UX designers, AR specialists, developers, and healthcare professionals. The focus would have been on creating a seamless and intuitive user interface that displayed real-time health data and integrated advanced features like food analysis and personalised recommendations. Regular feedback from potential users and healthcare providers would have been incorporated to refine the product and ensure it met the highest standards of usability and functionality.

Project Goals

  • Propose a seamless and real-time glucose monitoring solution through augmented reality glasses.

  • Offer comprehensive health data, including glucose levels, heart rate, and time-in-target percentages.

  • Integrate a food analysis feature that provides nutritional information and insulin dosage recommendations.

  • Improve the overall user experience for diabetic patients and health-conscious individuals.

Summary

The Glucose Monitoring Smart Glasses concept proposed an innovative solution for diabetes management by integrating real-time glucose monitoring with augmented reality technology. The glasses were designed to offer a range of features, including current blood glucose levels, 48-hour averages, heart rate monitoring, and a time-in-target percentage. The "Food Lens" feature was envisioned to analyse food items and provide nutritional information and insulin dosage recommendations. Despite the challenges related to data integration and user interface design, the concept aimed to deliver a user-friendly and comprehensive diabetes management tool.

Challenges with the Existing Journey

  1. Monitoring Methods: Traditional glucose monitoring methods are often inconvenient and lack real-time data integration.

  2. Lack of Comprehensive Data: Existing solutions typically provide limited health data, making it difficult for users to manage their diabetes effectively.

  3. Complex Food Analysis: Current food analysis tools are often inaccurate and not integrated with glucose monitoring systems.

What I Would Do Differently

  1. Enhanced Glycaemic Index Feature: Incorporate the ability to see the glycaemic index rating of foods to provide more comprehensive dietary guidance.

  2. Advanced Personalisation: Develop features to help diabetics meet specific body goals, such as building muscle or losing weight, by providing personalised dietary and exercise recommendations.

  3. Medication Reminders: Add a feature to remind users to take their medication, ensuring they stay on top of their treatment plan.
